The Black Widow Spider (Latrodectus genus) has a venomous bite that is dangerously toxic. You can identify the Black Widow by it’s shiny black body and distinct red hourglass-shape on it’s abdomen. This spider thrives in Florida’s tropical climate and is known to hide in dark crevices and hard to reach places. If bitten, a person may experience sharp pain in the bite area similar to that of a pinprick or needle. Minor swelling and redness may occur at first. After a short period of time additional symptoms may also occur such as difficulty breathing, headaches, muscle weakness, nausea and vomiting, and more. It is extremely important to keep the affected area a still as possible to prevent the venom from potentially spreading and to call 911 for quick medical attention.
